IT Support Engineer / System and Network Administrator

I look after the infrastructure people only notice when it stops: Windows servers and Active Directory, FortiGate firewalls, VLANs and switching, Microsoft 365, Avaya IP telephony, and the biomedical devices that feed results into hospital systems. Currently with Gulf Corporation for Technology in Juffair.

What I run day to day

Six areas I own day to day, from the server room down to the phone on a nurse's desk.

Servers and directory

Domain builds, user and group lifecycle, policies, virtual hosts and the file shares everyone depends on.

Network and switching

Segmenting traffic, patching new floors and departments, and finding the one port that is quietly dropping packets.

Security and firewall

Policy sets that let clinical work through and keep everything else out, with reporting managers actually read.

Microsoft 365 and mail

Tenant housekeeping, mailboxes, licences and the Outlook problem that lands five minutes before a board meeting.

Telephony and voice

Extensions, hunt groups and call flow changes, plus rolling out IP handsets across new floors and branches.

Where I have worked

Six roles across hospitals, a medical group, an analytics office and a technology corporation. Open any role to see the detail.

  • Biomedical device integration. Brought diagnostic and biomedical equipment onto client networks and information systems, working through IP addressing, VLAN placement, port and firewall rules, data flow testing and handover with suppliers, biomedical engineers and clinical staff.
  • Client facility support. Acted as the escalation point for client sites, resolving level one and level two incidents remotely and on site, and chasing vendors until issues actually closed.
  • Ran Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, file shares and permissions, plus the Microsoft 365 tenant including mailboxes, licences and multi factor authentication.
  • Maintained firewall, VPN and enterprise Wi-Fi, configured switches and VLANs for office changes, and kept backups, antivirus and patching on schedule.
  • Head office support. Support the corporate head office in Juffair day to day, covering desktops, laptops, servers, network, VoIP telephony, meeting room equipment and mobile devices.
  • Kept the paperwork straight: network diagrams, standard operating procedures, asset registers and monthly ticket reports for management.
  • Managed the hospital server and network estate: Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Hyper-V hosts, switches, access points and cabling.
  • Supported clinical, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy and admin users on HIS and HIMS applications, workstations and peripherals.
  • Administered FortiGate policies, VPN access, web filtering and bandwidth control for staff and guest networks.
  • Extended connectivity to new departments and clinics through switch port and VLAN configuration.
  • Kept VoIP telephony, CCTV, IPTV, patient queue and biometric attendance systems running, and coordinated vendor and AMC visits.
  • Held single point responsibility for group IT across the medical centre and its branches: servers, network, security, telephony, endpoints and facility systems.
  • HIMS and ERP implementation, 2018. Worked with the vendor on server readiness, client deployment, data migration support, user setup, staff training and post go live support.
  • New site roll outs. Delivered complete IT set up for new locations: internet link, cabling, switches, access points, PCs, printers, VoIP phones, biometric machines and employee registration.
  • Configured the FortiGate 100EF firewall including policies, web filtering, SSID and access point setup, and monthly bandwidth consumption reporting.
  • Administered Windows Server 2012 R2 with Active Directory, Group Policy, DHCP, DNS and Hyper-V, plus storage, backup schedules and restore checks.
  • Programmed Avaya IP Office at user level: new VoIP connections, extensions, group calls, speed dial and call handling.
  • Produced IT policy documents, full asset registers, preventive maintenance checklists and monthly ticket reviews.
  • Supported analytics and engineering teams in a multinational client environment across desktops, laptops, network and applications.
  • Handled incidents and requests through JIRA with monthly productivity and resolution reporting.
  • Ran McAfee antivirus updates and compliance reporting across all client endpoints.
  • Produced the IT infrastructure assessment and the full asset inventory covering the server room, user devices, access points and video conferencing kit.
  • First and second level support for desktops, laptops, operating systems, mail clients, printers and LAN connectivity.
  • Supported ERP users on access, printing, reporting and workstation configuration.
  • Handled installation, upgrades, backups and hardware replacement across departments, and coordinated warranty claims with vendors.
  • Supported hospital information systems, workstations, network printers and peripherals for clinical and admin departments.
  • Assisted with server administration, user accounts, cabling, switch connectivity and internet links.
  • Ran daily backups, antivirus updates and preventive maintenance, and escalated application faults to the software vendor.
